The concrete stringer proper undereach rail is 18 ins. wide and 13 ins. high, but it is an integralpart of the 7-in. bed of concrete placed between the railsand tracks and extending to the curb line. In laying, new tracks on streets that are being improved,if single track is being replaced with single track, traffic issuspended on the line and the concrete allowed to set sevendays before cars are run over it. Tiie same method is usedin replacing single track with double track, but in doubletrack when the old rails are being replaced with newconstruction one track is taken at a time, using a. THE TRACK BEFORE CONCRETING, SHOWING THE METHOD OF SUPPORTING RAILS ON BLOCKS AND THE TWO SETS OF TIES to the heavy tim1)er, ties of standard size are spiked to thesteam road rails. The whole crossing is then blocked up3 ins. above the normal grade and a bed of concrete 18 is placed under it. This bed extends on either side ofthe steam road track 6 ins. beyond the ties and back underit to the property line on each side of the street. After theconcrete has set eight days the crossing is dropped to thenormal grade. At railroad crossings bonding of the trackis continued through old T-rails which are embedded in theconcrete and are connected to the railway tracks at eitherend by copper bonds. The track construction described has been used on about8 miles of track in Dallas. Some of this track has been inservice for three or four years, and with exception of afew places where the foundation was not firm it has beenvery satisfactory. 6g2 STREET RAILWA
