In 1854, the repeal of the Missouri Compromise of 1820 opened anew political era, and an agitation of the slavery question was begunwhich was destined to grow until the shackles were struck foreverfrom the hands of the slave. By this repeal slavery claimed protection everywhere; it sought tonationalize itself. At this time the question of popular sovereigntyarose, the right of the people of a territory to choose their own institu-tions, and upon this question Mr. Lincoln and Mr. Douglas fought thebattle of the giants, and Mr. Lincolns signal ability as an orator wasforever established.
