The Onion thrives best in a rather deep, rich, loamy soil, and, unlike most vegetables, succeeds well when cultivated on the same ground for succes- sive years. The best culture requires that the ground should be deeply dug and heavily manured with well rotted manure the season or two previous. As soon as the ground can be prepared in the spring, sow thinlv in drills about a quarter of an inch deep and one foot apart; cover with fine soil and press down with the back of a spade or a light roller. When the young plants are strong enough, thin gradually so that they stand three or four inches apart. Keep the surface of the ground open and free from weeds by frequent hoeing, taking care not to stir too deeply, or to collect it about the growing bulbs. One ounce for 100 feet of drill; 4 or 5 pounds in drills for an SPANISH KING, OR PRIZE TAKER. A handsome, fine flavored sort, of a clear, bright straw color, and uniform perfect globe. Produces enormous crops, which keep wonderfully well. They ripen up hard and fine, and pre- sent a handsome appearance. Flesh pure white, fine grrained, mild and delicate in flavor. Its good keeping qualities render it one of the best for shipping. Large, slightly flattened, deep purplish red. Flesh coarser and stronger than the Early Red Globe, but rich and nutritious.
