Oil plant scarecrow (lower right), used to keep waterfowl off the oil plant's settling ponds. The waste discharged to these settling ponds contains traces of crude oil and bitumen, as well as rock and sand waste. The oil and bitumen is toxic to wildlife, and birds have died in the past after landing on such ponds. This settling pond is part of the Suncor processing plant (seen in the background), in the Athabasca Oil Sands, Alberta, Canada.
