NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (March 28, 2019) The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Monitor National Marine Sanctuary at the Mariners' Museum and Park houses more than 1,400 artifacts from the wreckage of USS Monitor. The Monitor, which sank off the coast of North Carolina in 1862, is scheduled to have its turret mounted on a new support structure by Huntington Ingalls Industries-Newport News Shipbuilding, a milestone in the ships conservation process.
