The foetus is enclosed in an amniotic sac (pink), which is filled with amniotic fluid that cushions the developing baby. The umbilical cord (pink) connects the foetus to the placenta, which provides nutrients and oxygen to the foetus. This foetus is in the birth position, with its head resting at the top of the birth canal. Foetuses usually assume this position from around the eighth month of pregnancy.
