Gas diffusion experiment. The gas in the upturned flask (hydrogen) is diffusing through the walls of the clay pipe and exerting pressure that is causing the coloured liquid to rise up the curved glass tube to which the pipe is attached. This demonstrates the ability of hydrogen to diffuse faster and through smaller spaces than other gases. Artwork from the seventh volume (first period of 1891) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
