Gortis war ein wichtige Stadt im Landesinneren Kretas und wurde bereits in der Steinzeit besiedelt. Ihre Blüte erlebte die Stadt in griechischer und römischer Zeit, aus der auch dieses Apollo-Tempel stammt.
