Ariane 5 rockets, exploded artwork. These are the ES (Evolution Storable, left) and ECA (Evolution Cryotechnique type A, right) versions of the Ariane 5 rocket. The payload in the upper stages of the rockets are the Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV, left), and two satellites (right). Ariane 5 launches, carried out by Arianespace for the European Space Agency and the French space agency (CNES), began in 1996. Over 50 successful launches have taken place since 1998. The ES configuration has been used since 2008 to launch ATVs to the International Space Station. The ECA configuration has been used for satellite launches since 2002.
