Looking east across the Waterpocket Fold aka Capitol Reef. Henry Mountains in the distance.
Looking across the Waterpocket Fold, west to east, from the side of Boulder Mountain. The land before us, mostly Entrada and Navajo sandstones, was pushed up and over the younger formations in the distance during a collision of crustal plates 70 to 40 million years ago, causing the leading edge of the thrust block to be folded under itself. The Henry Mountains, laccoliths which formed tens of millions of years later, form a backdrop to this scene.
