Lord Braybrookein his edition of Pepys makes the mistake of describing Turners eldestbrother, Sergeant Turner, as his son. Sergeant Turner was born 1612. Pepysfrequently alludes to him as his cousin, he having married Jane Pepys, of Cleake,Norfolk. 64. great bounty to his relations, he built also a Hospitalin this town and settled a valuable estate on it, for themaintenance of XL poor people, aged and children,over whom he appointed a chaplain, a master and amistress, with a liberal salary to each. This he sofinished 16 years before his death, Anno 1676. Hewas born 12th Sept., 1615 ; died 9th Feb., 1692, aged77 years 5 months wanting 3 dayes ; and by his owndirection he was buried in this place amongst thepoor of his hospital—the witnesses of his piety,liberality, and fine estate of Kirkleatham was bought by Turners fatherand mother in 1623, and never belonged to Sir William, butpassed to his eldest brother, Sergeant Turner, and his heirs.
