Nor was the protection of the southern coastneglected. At Cape May from May 24 to October30, 1813, Major William Potter commanded a de- /. KORT FISH AND CUNTON IN 1812. ONY AND AS A STATE 105 tachment of militia with companies from Cumber-land County, Salem County, and Burlington Coun-ty, and a company composed of Burlington andGloucester men. The fourteenth of July, 1814, brought a callfrom the governor of New Jersey for five hundredartillery and forty-five hundred infantry. Theregimental organization was effected upon Au-gust 12, 1814, by detailing a regiment from Ber-gen and Essex Counties, a regiment from Morrisand Sussex Counties and a regiment from Somer-set, Middlesex, and Monmouth Counties, thesethree regiments composing a brigade commandedby Brigadier-General Colfax. The second brigadewas composed of a regiment from Hunterdon andBurlington Counties and a regiment from Glouces-ter, Salem, Cumberland, and Cape May, com-manded by Brigadier-General Elmer, both bri-gades being under the general command of Major-General Shinn.
