The Merchant and The Genie

The Thousand and One Nights, or Arabian Nights, is a series of stories in Arabic strung together by the story of Scheherazade, or Sheherazade, who kept her husband, a sultan, from killing her by telling these tales over a 1,000 nights. The last tale was added later. Among the tales was that of the merchant and genie, pictured here in this 1902 illustration. The genie accused the merchant of tossing the date pit that hit his son and planned to take revenge by killing the merchant. An old man met the two and stalled the genie by saying he had to tell him an adventure. The genie agreed and that was one tale the sultan had to wait for the next night for more details.
