If he works an eight-hour day, he has eachwide column, which represents a day, ruled off intofour narrower columns, each representing twohours. If he works a nine-hour day, he rules theday off into four wide spaces of two hours eachand one narrower space representing one Figure 3 This ruling is indicated in Figure 3, which is asection from the Machine Record Chart, Figure4, facing page 113. On the left side of this chart he lists all themachines in his department, arranging them ingroups. At the top of each group he leaves a spacefor the total of that group. At the top of the Getting Things Done on Time 111 sheet he leaves a space for the total of the de-partment. Opposite each machine number he in-dicates whether or not the machine has been run-ning by drawing a light line through the time dur-ing which the machine ran. A blank space indi-cates that the machine did not run, and in thatspace he places a letter or symbol to indicate thereason why. Under the light line he draws aheavy line to indicate the cumulative running timeof the machine for the whole week. The lengthof this heavy line is always equal to the sum of thelight lines for the various days. The runningtime of the individual
