In 1856 served as presidentialelector, and again in the civil war broke outhe was opposed to the plans ofthe seceding states, but beingin the minority in his ownneighborhood, accepted theappointment of lieutenant-col-onel of a Tennessee regimentin the Confederate army andserved through the war. Be-ing favorably known to Andrew Johnson, whenthe latter became president Col. Key received fromhim a free pardon. He held several state officesafter the war, and in 1875 was appointed to AndrewJohnsons place in the U. S. senate, on the occasionof the death of the latter.
