Illustration of William the Conqueror (1028-1087), King of England. Also known as William the Bastard he was the illegitimate son of Robert I, Duke of Normandy. As Duke of Normandy, William led the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. He ruled until his death in 1087, with two of his sons later becoming kings of England.
