The same qualities which entitle the Lirio-dendron and Magnolias to a place among medi-cinal plants, exist abundantly in the kindred genusof lllicium. This family consists of fine, spicy,flowering shrubs, one of which, the I. anisatum,growing in Eastern Asia, derives its name fromthe similiarity of its flavour to that of Anise, aquality which exists, though less simple, in thesubject of the present article. Another species,the I. parviflorum, a shrub with small yellowishflowers, first discovered by Michaux in themountains of Georgia and Carolina, has soexactly the flavour of the Sassafras root, that theyare not to be distinguished by the taste.
