On the upper sur-face the vermis presents as a slightmedian elevation between thehemispheres; on the under surfaceit lies at the bottom of a deepgroove and is partly hidden by theoverlapping of the hemispheres. The surface of the cerebellum is incised by a series of slightly carved trans-verse fissures, practically parallel to one another and lying very close together(Fig. 51). Some of the fissures extend for a considerable distance into thecerebellar substance, and are used for descriptive purposes to divide thecerebellum into lobes which, however, are of no specific physiological im-portance. The cerebellum is connected with the rest of the brain by threeroots or peduncles—superior, middle, and inferior—on either side. The superiorpeduncles run upwards towards the mid-brain, gradually converging towards oneanother as they ascend. They are connected to one another by a thin plate ofnervous tissue—the valve of Vieussens—and disappear from surface view under. Anterior median fissure. 2. FourtliTeiitricle. 5. BUet. 7.
