Bulkeley Sugar Factory in St. George parish is no longer operational but remains largely intact. This huge crane once hoisted tons of sugarcane. For much of the 17th century, sugar production in tiny colonial Barbados (166 square miles) far exceeded that of other islands several times its size. Sugar production dominated the island's economy for centuries and produced great wealth for the original plantation owners and Britain as a whole. Today, although the nation's leading industry is tourism, sugar production still plays an important role in the island's economy and cultural identity.
