Cis-1,2-dibromoethene. Computer illustration of a molecule of cis-1,2-dibromoethene (formula: C2H2Br2). The atoms are represented as cylinders, and are colour-coded: carbon (yellow), hydrogen (white) and bromine (red). This molecule is displaying cis isomerism. 1,2-dibromoethene can exist in two forms with the same chemical formula (isomers). The bromine atoms can either be adjacent to each other (as here), or opposite each other (the trans form). As the bond between the two carbon atoms cannot rotate, a molecule cannot alternate between the two forms. See image A700/139 for a molecule of the trans form.
