Mistletoe stem. Polarised light micrograph of a transverse section through the stem of a mistletoe (Viscum album) plant. The epidermis (outer layer) has a thick layer of cuticle made of waterproof wax (yellow-black). The inner cortex has bundles of supporting fibres (green). Underneath this are the vascular bundles containing phloem (black), xylem vessels (green), patches of parenchyma (green), and the inner primary meta and proto-xylem (also green). The pith (large, centre) is made up parenchyma (purple-red). Magnification: x14 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
