Installed directly under the turbine is aWheeler surface condenser with 10,000 sq. ft. of condens-ing surface, to which water is supplied by a 20-in. cen-trifugal pump driven by a Westinghouse compound engine and pump are located on opposite sides of the. HORIZONTAL STEAM SEPARATOR Steam end turbine pier and the shaft passes through thispier. VALVE IN ENGINE EXHAUST An accompanying drawing shows a cross section of the42-in. valve and elbow between the turbine exhaust andthe condenser. This elbow and its parts were designed bythe company and were built in a local foundry and machineshop. The atmospheric relief valve just above the gatevalve is pivoted on a crank and is provided with gasketseat. The cost of the elbow and parts, approximately$1,350, was much less than the cost of using standardvalves and fittings, and the elbow makes a much more com-pact arrangement. THE BOILER FEED PUMP. Probably the most extraordinary feature in connectionwith the condensers installation is that the hot well pmnpis dispensed with. In its place a specially designed boilerfeed pump is used to draw the water from the vacuum inthe hot well and force it into the boilers.
