Mahabalipuram lies on the Coromandel Coast which faces the Bay of Bengal. It has various historic monuments built largely during the reigns of Narasimhavarman and his successor Rajasimhavarman (Pallava dynasty -between the 7th and the 9th century), and has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984. Arjuna's Penance or Bhagiratha's Penace at Mahabalipuram, measuring 96 feet (29 m) long by 43 feet (13 m) high, it is a giant open-air relief carved of the a monolithic rock. The legend depicted in the relief is the story of the descent of the sacred river Ganga to earth from the heavens led by Bhagirata. The bas-relief is also known as The Descent of Ganga.
