A photograph of Saturn with some of its moons. This photo was taken through a small 'C-14' amateur telescope. Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun, and the second largest in the Solar System. Although probably known from prehistory, the first recorded observations of the planet date from about 650 BC in a Mesopotamian script. The elongated shape of the planet's image is due to the extensive system of rings, first described by Huygens in 1656. Thanks mainly to the Voyager spacecraft missions, it is known that Saturn possesses at least seven concentric rings and seventeen moons.
