The North Island saddleback is a wattlebird in the passerine bird group and is endemic to New Zealand. Near extinction at the end of the 20th century mainly threatened by introduced mammals the saddleback is now recovering because of careful conservation. Der Nordinsel-Sattelvogel gehört zu den Lappenvögel und ist damit ein Singvogel, der nur auf Neuseeland lebt. Bedroht von eingeschleppten Säugetieren stand die Art am Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts kurz vor dem Aussterben. Durch sorgfältigen Artenschutz erholen sich die auch Tieke genannten Vögel heute wieder
