Kafsokalyvia skete in mount Athos. Chalkidiki, Greece

Sketch with pen and ink vectorized and colorized electronically. The skete of Kavsokalyvia belongs to the Holy Monastery of the Great Lavra. It lies on the steep, rocky location near the coast. It was founded in the 18th century by the monk Akakios the oung. It acquired its name from the monk Maximos, who lived here during the 14th century. Maximos had built a hut, but every time he saw others preparing to live close to him, he burned it and left. This skete was home to the Ecumenical Patriarch Joacim the Third during his exile. It is a Greek idiorrhythmic skete consisting of forty kalyvae. It is inhabited by 35 monks who are occupied with hagiography, wood carving, miniature art and the production of incense. The Kyriakon is dedicated to the Holy Trinity; it was built in 1745 and was frescoed at the same time. Its narthex was added in 1804 and was frescoed in 1820. In this skete one can find the renowned hagiography school of the Iosaphaios brothers. Close by one will find the kalyve of Saint John the Theologian, which includes a church frescoedby the monk Metrophanes in 1776. In the library of the skete, codices, many printed books, icons, crosses, vestments and relics of saints are in safe-keeping.
