The purple flower of a spotted knapweed (Centaurea maculosa). This noxious weed was found on Mt. Jumbo in Missoula, Montana.


Spotted Knapweed was introduced to North America in the late 1800's as a contaminant in alfalfa and through discarded soil used as ship ballast.
