The Big Three heads of government at Potsdam, Germany, circa 28 July 1 August 1945. British Prime Minister Clement Atlee; President Harry S. Truman; Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin. Atlee and Truman replaced Churchill and Roosevelt as the British and US heads of state. During the war Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin had developed a gudging respect for each other which was not there with these new leaders. This hastened the end of east-west co-operation and deepened the Cold War.
