Wat Xieng Thong was built by King Setthathirath in1559-1560 near the junction of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers. Wat Xieng Thong is one of the most important of Lao monasteries. Until 1975 the wat was a royal temple under the patronage of the royal family and the Lao kings were crowned here. There are over twenty structures on the grounds and one of them houses the ceremonial barge with its gilded 7-headed naga (cobra).
