La Palma. Space Shuttle image of the volcanic island of La Palma, largest of the western Canary Islands, in the Atlantic Ocean (blue). North is at top left. Clouds are scattered at upper right. It is thought that a future volcanic eruption, within the next few thousand years, could cause the western half of the island to collapse into the sea. The impact of 500 billion tonnes of rock would create a mega-tsunami, a massive wave of water. This would cross the Atlantic Ocean within hours, swamping the islands of the Caribbean Sea and devastating the eastern coast of the USA, travelling up to 20 kilometres inland.
