Most Flower Seeds germinate well in a fine, sandy loam, partially protected from the sun. Heat and moisture are the two essential points to start life in seeds. A general rule for the seed bed is, to have the soil level and worked very finely. Sow the seed evenly in rows and cover to the depth of about three times the size of the seeds, with the finest of soil pressed firmly over it. It is of the utmost im- portance to see that the seeds are not planted too deep, (in which case they are sure to rot) nor should the soil ever become dry after germination has started, as it invariably will kill the new life. To protect against such failures it is best to start all fine seeds in small seed-boxes, as the surface of the soil can then be kept more properly moistened and protected from the scorching rays of the sun.
