But, of course,in those times they were hardly classed as being evencivilized, much less enlightened. As we progress intime we will find hair-dressing more complicated andornate. After this consideration of the dressing of hairwe must naturally come to the dressing of the hairin the Middle Ages. After that, we will describe it in Page Fifty-Six. All of these will neces-sarily necessitate much description and many illustra-tions. The latter, of course, will be the most in-structive, as well as interesting, in connection withthe subject. A very instructive as well as illuminating part ofthe subject is hair-dressing in women at the presentday and this is of especial interest to those who pay-any attention to this part of the manners and customsof modern life as we see it in our travels at homeand abroad. It is more especially so today whenwe take into consideration our more intimate relationswith Oriental nations. When we come to medieval times we find that thehair dressing of women was quite simple, a fact easilydetermined by references to portraits of the period.
