Satellite image showing ground surface temperatures in London, UK, just before midnight on the 15th July 2022. Red areas are where the temperature exceeds 20 degrees Celsius (C) and are predominantly paved streets and built structures. Parks and wooded areas are cooler (yellow and green). The River Thames, winding across the centre of the image, is seen as hotter than the land as it takes longer for water to change temperatures. A few days later, on the 19th July, the record for an overnight low temperature was beaten, when the ground surface temperature did not fall below degrees C. Data obtained by the Ecosystem Spaceborne Thermal Radiometer Experiment on Space Station (ECOSTRESS) instrument onboard the International Space Station (ISS).
