Pope was now onthe Upper Rappahannock, with the corps of Banks andSigel, the former at Culpeper, the latter at outposts of infantry and cavalry under Generals8. W. Crawford and George D. Bayard were along theRapidan, covering the approaches to Culpeper andSperryville [see map, p. 450]. On the 8th Bayardspickets discovered the enemy crossing at Barnetts Fordin large force, and retired along the Orange Court Houseroad toward Culpeper. Jacksons object was to strike Banks at Culpeperbefore the latter could be recnforced. On Jackson
