Surgical pneumatic compression sleeve. Medical staff adjusting a pneumatic compression sleeve on a patient undergoing surgery. This sleeve has been placed on the patient's leg and is attached via plastic tubes to an air pump which inflates and deflates sections of the sleeve. The compression can be sequential and intermittent, or uniform. The waves of pressure squeeze fluids through the tissues of the leg, ensuring movement of venous blood. This can help prevent deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism and cardiac depression, which are risks during surgery. Photographed in a UK hospital in 2014.
