Range.—Northern parts of North America, breeding from southern Canadanorthward in the interior and on both coasts. South to the middle portions ofthe United States in winter. This is the smallest of the Loon family being twenty-five inches in length. Inplumage it is wholly unlike any of the other members at all seasons of the yearIn summer the back, head and neck are gray, the latter being striped witliwhite. A large chestnut patch ad(.)rns the frontof the lower part of the neck Inwinter the back is spotted with white, whereas all the others are unspotted at thisperiod. The nesting habits are identical with the other species ; the groundcolor of the two eggs is also the same. Size Data.—North IcelandMay 20, 1900. Nest on the ground on bank of river.
