At the age of seven-teen, in the year 1839, he enteredthe Military Academy at WestPoint. Here he was regarded as asolid, sensible young man of fair abilities, and ofsturdy, honest character. He took respectable rankas a scholar. In June, 1843, he graduated, about themiddle in his class, and was sent as lieutenant of in-fantry to one of the distant military posts in the Mis-souri Territory. Two years he past in these drearysolitudes, watching the vagabond and exasperatingIndians. The war with Mexico came. Lieut. Grant wassent with his regiment to Corpus Christi.
