Crenulation cleavage. Polarised light micrograph of an advanced stage of microstructural faulting and deformation in a micaceous rock. Crenulation cleavage, the intense microfolding seen in this thin section, results from successive phases of deformation acting in different directions. This image has been obtained using cross-polarised light (or 'crossed nichols'), which helps to reveal stresses such as this.
