View of the waterfront at Tivat, Montenegro: training ship "Jadran" moored alongside
Jadran is a sailing school ship built for the Yugoslav Navy and now owned by the navy of Montenegro. Her name means "Adriatic", and most of the ship’s training voyages are undertaken in the Mediterranean. She was built in Hamburg, in the HC Stülcken & Sohn shipyard, and launched on 25 June 1931. She was commandeered during World War II by Italy and sailed as MARCO POLO. She was then used as a floating bridge in one of the canals in Venice. After the war she was returned to Yugoslavia where she underwent major refurbishment. Further reconstruction was undertaken in the mid 1950s and again in the 1960s when she was almost completely rebuilt. Today she is operated by the Navy of Montenegro.
