The Susque-hanna breaks through the mountain range near Pittston, where, en-tering the valley from the north, it receives the Lackawanna river, andstrikes to the south-west, traversing the valley in a nearly straightline, until within a few miles of Columbia county, where it makes agraceful bend around Wyoming Mountain; pitches due south to thatof the Nescopeck, and then again stretches out in a south-west course,and enters that county. The county of Luzerne is plentifully supplied with streams. Ex-cepting one or two of nearly equal area further west, it probably con-. 238 OFF-HAND SKETCHES. tains more small streams and little lakes than any other county in theState. The principal ones are the Susquehanna, the Lackawanna, theLehigh, the Wapwallopen, Nescopeck, and the north fork of theLehigh—all south-east of the Shawnee Mountain. West of this moun-tain range are numerous small rivulets, where trout most do congre-gate, as Huntingdon, Shickshinny, Harveys, Tobys, Bowmans andothers. Some ten miles north-west of Wilkesbarre, is Harveys Lake,
