Land iguana. 1896 engraving of a Galapagos \land iguana\", Conolophus subcristatus. This cactus- eating lizard was observed by Charles Darwin during his visit to the Galapagos Islands in 1835. The animals were then so common that Darwin wrote: \"we could not for some time find a spot free from their burrows on which to pitch our single tent\". The species is now rare throughout the Galapagos, where deforestation by goats has destroyed much of its natural habitat. Adults measure about a metre in length (including tail) and are yellow to brown in colour."
