The Minnenwater - Lake of Love - is located in the south of the city of Bruges, Belgium. Here we see its quaint Beginjnhof stone links the modern (mostly) city - through the elaborate white gates - with the 'Princely Beguinage Ten Wijngaarde' with its white-coloured house fronts and tranquil convent gardens. Founded in 1245. This area was once the home of the beguines, local emancipated lay-women who led a pious and celibate life. Today it is inhabited by nuns of the Order of St. Benedict, together with a number of pious Bruges women who have decided to remain unmarried.
