Scientific confirmations of Old Testament history. ge between Asia and Africaforty or fifty feet above sea-level, and would cover thehighest places at Serapeum and Chaloof to a depth ofonly a few feet. That there was such a depression in recent times isclear from both direct and indirect evidence. Duringthe present geological epoch the whole region aroundthe eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea has risenabout two hundred and fifty feet. Indubitable evi-dence of this may be seen near the summit of the iso-lated eroded cliff known to the Arabs as Het el-Orab,or the Crows Nest, about half a mile south of thepyramids at Gizeh, which is about the same level withthe pyramid plateau, approximately two hundred feetabove the sea. Here there is a clearly defined recentsea-beach, composed of well-worn pebbles, from aninch or two to a foot in diameter, the interstices ofwhich are filled with small oyster-shells, loosely cement-ed together. A collection which the writer personallymade of these shells, submitted to Dr. F. L. Kitchin, 98 The :^ flS*^ General View of the Crows Nest, from the Pyramids. of the British Geological Survey, were pronounced tobe indistinguishable from Alectryotiia cucullata. Born,a variable form which occurs in Pliocene deposits andalso lives at the present day in the Red Sea. This sea-beach was first discovered by Dr. Oscar Fraas, and hasbeen described by Schweinfurth and Dawson. Theseobservers noticed, also, that the face of the plateau hadbeen pierced by lithodomus mollusks {Pholades rugosa,Broc.) and reported shells of Ostrea undata, Goldf.,and Pec ten Dunkri, Ma^^ Another locality where similar evidence occurs is atthe base of the Mokattam Hills, upon the opposite side The Exodus. 99
