The third rail is carried onone side or the other of the track, dependingon local conditions. The motor cars are furnished with fourshoes, two at each end, and the distance be-tween the two shoes on each side is m(47/; ft-)- The usual composition of a train is onedouble-truck motor car, one six-wheel trail carand three four-wheel trail cars. The speed of a train of 70 tons on a 3 percent grade is 23 km (14/ miles) an hour, andon a level is 35 km (22 miles) an hour.
