SELECTED CARROT SEED Culture.—Carrots deserve a more general cultivation in the South than they now have. The young, tender roots are excellent stewed or boiled, either alone or with meat, as well as for seasoning and flavoring soups. Sow 1 ounce of seed to 100 feet of row; about 3 pounds per acre. Sow seed in shallow drills in early spring when leaves are starting out. Make succession sowings about a month apart to give a continuous supply. When plants are well started, thin out to 4 inches apart in the row. Sow in rich or well-fertilized soil worked deep. Most varieties of carrot are deep-rooted. Soil should be prepared sufficiently deep so that the roots can penetrate without difficulty. Work often, keeping the ground free from weeds and grass. Make drills 16 to 18 inches apart for easy working. In Florida sow seed September to November. Ready to use in about 80 days. , —This is a stump-rooted variety, the best of its class. A half- long sort, unexcelled in quality and productiveness; very uniform
