MicroRNA precursor molecule, illulstration

Illustration of the double-stranded RNA (ribonucleic acid) precursor of microRNA-21 (pre-miRNA-21). miRNAs are short single-stranded RNA molecules that act to inhibit the expression of specific genes by regulating the expression of messenger RNA (mRNA). miRNA-21 has been shown to be consistently overexpressed in most human cancers, leading to the down-regulation of factors that suppress tumours and initiate cell death. Mechanisms for inhibiting miRNA-21 are therefore being studied for the treatment of cancer.
