In the following years this ambitious chieftain,a man of decided warlike genius and force of char-acter, inspired his people with his own sentiments, andinvaded and made himself monarch of the whole islandgroup. Alert of mind and keen of wit, the new monarchinduced Vancouver to build him a vessel on the Euro-pean model, to which in the succeeding years he addednumerous others, obtained fire-arms from the tradingwhites, drilled and trained his men, and easily over-came his brave but less progressive opponents. Heorganized a standing army, built armories and bat-teries, and erected at Honolulu a strong fort mountedwith heavy guns. The Hawaiian king used his absolute power wiselyand well.
