Thermogram of a neuropathic ulcer on the foot of a diabetic patient. Neuropathy is a disease of the peripheral nerves that appears in diabetes. The potential for such ulcers healing depends on the patency of the surrounding blood vessels. A thermogram, a colour-coded plot of heat distribution, may be used to investigate. Here, the ulcer at left (blue-green, cold) is surrounded by warmer tissue (red & white) which possesses a good blood supply. Other white, hot spots represent sites of previous ulcers. Ulcers surrounded by cooler tissue have a lesser healing potential. Compare with M280/051 (clinical photo).
