In a corner by the doorleading into the choir and almost concealed by a cup-board is the portrait of Fra Giovanni himself, the friarwho as has been said did this intarsia work, thegreatest master of the kind that Italy has ever pro-duced. He died in 1520. The frescoes are all byMorone, and it has well been said tiiat this sacristy isa masterpiece of Veronese art. There is also here alovely picture by Girolamo dai Libri, the Madonnadel Limone, of the Blessed Virgin enthroned, with ^ Spa-uentl-Guida di Verona^ p. DOORWAY OF CAllVED WOOD IN THE SACRISTV OF S. Maria in Organ o St Stephen and St Catherine below, a delightful settingof leaves, fruit, and architectural detail, all in a floodof sunlight which enhances the efl^ect a hundredfold.^ The choir of the monks opens out from the sacristy,and here again are treasures of carving and of inlaidwoodwork also by Fra Giovanni, possessing a topo-graphical value as well as an artistic one in that theyrepresent views of the city of that date and place beforeus scenes which no longer exist. There are here viewsof Rome also ; and the value of such abiding testimonyas to the days that are no more, is enough in itself tomake one linger in the church of Sta. Maria in Organo,and muse in delight and wonder over the industry andtalent that prompted this labour of love so manycenturies ago.
