Total ankle replacement surgery. Surgeon examining X-rays of a patient's lower leg and ankle joint prior to carrying out a total ankle replacement operation. This operation is also known as a total ankle arthroplasty (TAA), and is used as an alternative to fusing the ankle joint. The affected parts of the joint are removed and replaced with implants. The operation is usually carried out in severe cases of arthritis of the ankle joint.
